 Hello, A 20% podophyllin solution has been used to treat HPV genital warts (condyloma) in the past; however, it is no longer the treatment of choice, as it is a rather crude extract and can have side effects and toxicities. A 0.15% - 0.5% solution of podophyllotoxin (podofilox) in gel or cream form is the purified and standardized active ingredient in podophyllin. Podofilox (marketed as Condylox, Wartec or Warticon) is safer and more effective than podophyllin. There are many other treatment methods available and used to treat visible warts. The type of treatment depends on the severity and location of the warts. Treatment options in addition to podofilox, which is often the first-line choice, include imiquimod (Aldara), sinecatechins (Veregen, Polyphenon E), liquid nitrogen cryosurgery, trichloroacetic acid, laser ablation, electrocauterization and interferon.
