Very fortunately not every HIV exposure leads to HIV transmission! Your experience is an excellent example of this. Many folks are under the mistaken impression that if they are exposed to HIV they will absolutely become HIV infected. While it is possible to become infected with only a single exposure, certainly every HIV exposure does not equate to a100% rate of HIV-transmission. The CDC's per-episode estimated statistical risk of acquiring HIV from receptive penile-vaginal exposure (unprotected vaginal sex) with a partner confirmed to be HIV positive is 1 per 1,000 exposures! In essence having unprotected sex with an HIV-positive person is like playing sexual Russian Roulette! Therefore your wife has been extremely lucky!
Regarding her current HIV status, her last exposure (unprotected sex) was June 10, 2010. She had a negative HIV test on September 1, 2010. This is very encouraging, but she will need an additional test six months from the date of last exposure to confirm her HIV-negative status. You will need to use latex condoms for all penetrative sex. No more unprotected sex!!! I'm shocked that you weren't informed or didn't realize you shouldn't have unprotected sex over the past eight years. You were diagnosed HIV positive and began ART in 2002! Didn't your HIV specialist advise you not to have unprotected sex??? He certainly should have. At least now you know and fortunately, at least so far, your wife is continuing to test HIV negative. Let's hope she continues to do so. Make sure you inform her obstetrician of what's transpired so far.
Good luck to you both.
