can you get a false negative result 12 month+ poss exposure?

Aug 13, 2010

Hi doc, I was possibly exposed 2 hiv in sept 2008, during the next 6 month I had geo tongue, oral ulcers, diarheah, swollen glands in neck , I then took 3 mirates home tests over the next 6 month period, all negative, but I doubt there reliability as mirates as a company has now ceased 2 in march this year I went to my local GUM clinic and done a full sexual health screenening including hiv, and my results were negtive !! So my panic over, until recently I have developed angular chelitis none stop for the past 3 month, with a white build up in both corners of my mouth, also I am still suffering from geographic tongue reguulary, and often get lots of painless white patches on the side of my tongue that I can scrape off...basically my question is, is it at all possible for my negative hiv result at the GUM clinic over a year after a possible exposure to be wrong ??? I ask this because I have a new girlfriend and I am terrified 2 sleep with her incase I may still have hiv, and it has been missed, thanks, u help will be greatly appreciated !

Response from Dr. Frascino

Your repeatedly negative HIV tests, including your most recent negative test at the GUM clinic which was over a year out from your potential exposure, are definitively, conclusive and WOO-HOO-able. Whatever is causing your symptoms, one thing is certain: it's not HIV. No way. No how. No additional HIV tests are warranted.

Be well.
