Truvada as a PEP medication
Jul 25, 2010
I am a medical student who recently had a pericutanious stick with a 30 gauge anesthetic syringe. I was started on once daily truvada later that day. Is this medication sufficient on its own.
Response from Dr. Frascino
Truvada is a two-drug regimen (emtricitabine plus tenofovir). Two-drug regimens are sometimes prescribed for PEP (Combivir, Truvada, etc.). Personally I favor three-drug regimens, particularly if there has been a significant HIV exposure.
You mention you sustained a percutaneous needle stick. Was the patient confirmed to be HIV infected? You should discuss your case and treatment options with the HIV specialist following your course of PEP.
