I'm a lab assistant working in Munich. I had a needle stick accident on 24.3.2010 after taking blood from a HIV pos. patient. Her Viral load was in 15.01.2010 small 20 Copies. I was a bit careless after the needle stick, and just washed and disinfected a bit. Only after 20 mins I saw that the patient was positiv. I immedeatly went to the clinic and got PEP after 4.5-5 hours. Kaletra and Truvada for 28 days. It was difficult, because I vomitted quiet often, but I somehow continued for 28 days. Now it's 28 days after PEP. I havent got any symptoms yet, but Im kind of thinking that I will get infected. Although the docters here in Munich say, the chances are almost by 0, that I get infected. What are my chances??? Please help. Thanks.

I agree with the physicians. Your HIV-acquisition risk from your occupational exposure is very small, considering the type of exposure and low HIV plasma viral load of the source patient and that you took PEP within five hours. You'll need post-PEP HIV-antibody tests at six weeks, three months and six months from the date of exposure. I would rate your odds of being HIV negative as excellent!
