risk?
Apr 27, 2001

HI-

a couple months ago i had unprotected oral sex with a sex worker. she gave me and i gave her. i am a male.

please advise what r my risks? i do not know her status and i worry a bit.

thanks

Response from Mr. Kull

There are only a few documented cases of someone getting HIV infected by performing oral sex on a woman. HIV is more difficult to isolate in cervical and vaginal secretions than semen. To be specific, virus concentration is higher in cervical secretions and menstrual fluids than vaginal fluids. It is believed that vaginal fluids dilute the more infectious fluid, decreasing the chances of transmission to someone's mouth. The penis is more likely to come into contact with cervical secretions. Other factors aside (protective factors in saliva, oral health), this may be why we don't see transmission occurring through cunnilingus.

Please read through the CDC's fact sheet on oral sex for more information (http://thebody.com/cdc/oralsex.html).
