Regarding quantitative HIV plasma RNA PCR tests, they are not recommended for routine HIV screening, due to the rate of false positives, other technical considerations and cost. The best and most reliable test for routine HIV screening remains the HIV-antibody test (ELISA, EIA, rapid test). This should be done three months or longer from the date of exposure.
