ART Question
Jul 1, 2009

Hi Dr. Bob. I was wondering if antiretroviral therapy could give you a false negative? Note that im not talking about the window period, i have read that ART during acute infection might result in false negatives. I mean, lets say for instance, 2 years after infection.... could ART give a false negative? Thanks.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

No. ART (antiretroviral therapy) does not affect HIV-antibody test results two years after infection. No way. No how. ART could drive an HIV plasma viral load to undetectable levels. Consequently if someone was using viral load (PCR RNA) testing as an HIV-diagnostic test, ART could cause a "false negative" in this limited situation only. However, the HIV-antibody test would continue to test positive despite ART.

Dr. Bob
