Reactive HIV test, but indeterminate Western Blot
Jun 12, 2009

Dr. Bob--

I recently had an HIV test. The result was High, 10.47. Repeatedly Reactive. So, they did a Western Blot. This came back Indeterminate.

This was prenatal blood work. My CBC was completely normal, including a normal White Blood Count. I have been with my husband for a over a year and a half. Prior to this I was married to someone else for over 15 years. I was tested for HIV with all three pregnancies and they were negative. I was tested again in April of 2007 and it was negative. From April 2007-January 2008, I did have unprotected sex with a couple of people. I am now awaiting results on a retest and I am panicking.

What is going on? Should I be worried?

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

It's entirely possible your indeterminate HIV result (repeatedly reactive ELISA plus indeterminate Western Blot is considered an indeterminate HIV test result) is due to nonspecific cross-reacting antibodies, which can cause "false positive" or "indeterminate" results. This occurs fairly frequently in women who are pregnant or have ever been pregnant. Review the information in the archives. We have an entire chapters devoted to topics such as pregnancy and HIV test results that discuss these issues in detail. Good luck with your follow-up test results!

Dr. Bob
