Response from Dr. Frascino

Septrin (also called Septra or Bactrim) is an antibiotic. It is used in folks with AIDS (CD4 less than 200) to help prevent the opportunistic infections Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) and toxoplasmosis. It does not have any effect on HIV viral replication or CD4 cell counts. You can read much more about opportunistic illness prophylaxis in the archives.
