Your Experience With Rapid Tests (scientifical)
Oct 8, 2008
What is your experience with rapid HIV tests? Meaning, have you ever had a situation where someone tested negative outside the window period; however, that person was later found to be positive? Also, have you ever dealt with failure of rapid tests even though the control line was accurate? One last question, does the intensity of the control line mean anything.
From a nurse on a college campus.
Response from Dr. Frascino
Hi College Campus Nurse,
We have had excellent results with rapid HIV testing at the Frascino Medical Group.
Have we ever had someone test negative outside the window period and then test positive at a later date? No, not unless there had been additional risky HIV exposures that occurred during the interval.
Have we seen failure of rapid tests despite having an accurate control line? No.
Does the integrity of the control line mean anything? No.
We are certainly aware of recent concerns regarding rapid oral HIV test sensitivity and specificity. Comparative studies are underway to evaluate this scientifically. We are running some comparative studies at the Frascino Medical Group as well. So far we have not found a problem with either false positives or false negatives. We'll keep you posted if and when further information becomes available.
