How many people actually have HIV?
Jul 30, 2008

I am wondering what the estimate of people thought to be infected with HIV in the United States. I want to know the percent. Is 50% of America infected? Thanks!

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

Fifty percent!?!?! YIKES! How did you come up with that guess? You've been watching way too much Fox News lately. If 50% of Americans were infected, that's one out of two. So, on average, one of your parents would be infected and half of all your aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and friends. Obviously that's not the case. Current estimates put HIV infections around 1,000,000 in the U.S. Of note is that 25% of that one million have absolutely no idea they are infected! You can read more about HIV statistics in the archives and on related links elsewhere on this site. Have a look around.

Dr. Bob
