Tre enzyme is our leading hope to cure hiv
Jul 8, 2008
Hi Dr Bob, l just cut and paste a story l read on Tre enzyme, could this be the holy cure ??? what we need is a postive globel push for a cure, l think the germans are leading the way in the push for a cure... what do think of the chances of this treatment ???
The most recent breakthrough in treatment comes from a German scientist who found an enzyme, called Tre, that cuts the HIV-producing DNA from human cells, leaving the remaining DNA unharmed and free of HIV.
"We have rid the cells of the virus," said Joachim Hauber of Hamburg's Heinrich Pette Institute for Experimental Virology in an article on The Body Web site. "No one else has done this before. It's a breakthrough in biotechnology."
The scientists will be doing three years of experiments on mice before human trials can begin.
The procedure offers hope for some day curing AIDS, but it's not a matter of popping a pill. It's a high-tech process that still needs fine-tuning.
"In terms of a successful cure," Tetreault said, "they're just not there yet."
thank you Dr Bob for your time
Response from Dr. Frascino
This may well be a "breakthrough in biotechnology," but I do not feel it's "our leading hope to cure HIV!" Please note there are a great many promising avenues currently being explored from gene therapy to immune-based therapy to stem-cell therapy in the hope that ultimately we'll find a cure. It's important to note the scientific work you reference is extremely preliminary! "The scientists will be doing three years of experiments on mice before human trials can begin"!!! The chances of this actually making it to the pharmacy shelves at your local Piggly Wiggly remain, unfortunately, quite slim. We'll all continue to keep our fingers, toes and everything else (eyes?) crossed in hopes this might someday pan out, but I certainly wouldn't suggest putting all your eggs in this one basket!
