unprotected sex vs oral sex
May 13, 2008
Dear Dr. Frascino, from reading things online a lot of people say someone can get HIV from oral sex. Would this be the same thing as a female transmitting hiv to a male through unproteced sex of a brief exposure. Also, do you personally believe a female can transmit hiv to a male through unprotected sex. And if so, how many cases of this have you seen.
Response from Dr. Frascino
Questions like yours continue to amaze (and shock) me. There are over 33,000,000 people currently living with HIV worldwide today. Over half of them are men. If an HIV-infected female were not able to transmit the virus to an uninfected male partner, how the hell did over 16,000,000 men contract HIV/AIDS? Did you think they were all gay or intravenous drug users? The fact is that the vast, vast majority of HIV-positive men contracted the virus from infected HIV-positive female partners via unprotected heterosexual sex. This is not rocket science; it's mere common sense. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has been with us now for over a quarter of a century and it's phenomenal that I'm still being asked if I "personally believe a female can transmit HIV to a male through unprotected sex." Dearie, it's time to wake up and smell the Starbucks! Frevinsakes!
(Forum readers, here we have another example of either: (1) home schooling, (2) Dubya's disastrous abstinence-only sex education program or (3) an alien recently teleported from the former planet Pluto. Is there any doubt we need to bring science-based sex education back to our schools?!?!?)
OK, back to your questions. To answer your other question: Oral sex transmission and insertive penile-vaginal transmission do not carry the same degree of risk for possible HIV transmission. Unprotected insertive penile-vaginal sex with a partner confirmed to be HIV positive poses at least a 10-fold greater risk (5.0 per 10,000 exposures) than insertive unprotected oral sex (0.5 per 10,000 exposures).
Finally, how many cases have I seen? I have no idea. I lost count long ago.
