Chance from Pre-cum

Apr 15, 2008

I met an African American man in early February. We ended up talking about having sex, but I decided not to because we didn't have condoms. I ended up falling asleep and woke up to him inside of me, but it could not have been more then a couple minutes. He did not cum inside of me, but may have released pre-ejaculate. He said he did not have anything, but I know that is not reliable. I now have swollen lymph nodes for the past couple months. What are the odds of me having contracted hiv from him, in case he had it but did not know. I am very worried.

Response from Dr. Frascino

You woke up with him inside you for a couple minutes!?!?!? Wow, you must be one heavy sleeper! I think most folks might wake up if they were being impaled on a throbbing tallywhacker of love!

Your HIV risk is brief unprotected receptive penile-vaginal sex without ejaculation with a partner of unknown HIV status. As such your HIV-acquisition risk is extremely low, but not completely nonexistent. HIV can be transmitted by pre-cum.

I would not worry about your swollen nodes, as this is a very nonspecific symptom. However, I would recommend a single rapid HIV test at the three-month mark (because you had brief unprotected sex, not because of the nodes!). The odds are very much in your favor and excessive worry is not warranted. However, I would recommend an HIV test to put any residual worries permanently to risk. Good luck.
