|Then why so many people diagonized positive ?
Feb 26, 2008
Dear Doctor Bob I can't understand one thing.Since I became addicted to your humorous and informative answers and reading the whole archive, in one of your answers you said the chances of getting hiv from a hiv+ person in a penile-vaginal sexual intercourse is 6 on 10.000 exposures. Then how can we explain the hundreds of thousands hiv+ cases. Are there really that many people performing risky sexual contacts and even if there are shouldn't the positive cases be thousands rather than hundreds of thousands. Sorry if I used a bad english I'm writing you from turkey, a country which only had 2000 hiv+ cases till now and(and maybe) as a result doesn't have much education on aids.I also inform my friends through your website thanks for all!

This seems confusing because you are trying to compare apples to oranges. Statistical analysis can be confusing. In short, you cannot extrapolate an incidence or prevalence rate based on estimated per-act risk statistics. These are two distinct pieces of information.
