increase in HIV infections in NY

Sep 26, 2007

Hi, I know that we keep hearing that oral sex is low risk and we don't need to use condoms for oral. But this new report has got me wondering. Can we assume from this new study that these men are getting HIV from anal sex or intravenous drugs. Not all gay men do anal or intravenous, but probably 99.9% do oral, and when you think about it, how many use condoms for oral? Do you think oral is a higher risk than what we think? thanks! Sam here's the article.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi Sam,

No, quite the opposite. Based on the vast majority of epidemiological studies, we now believe oral sex most likely poses a lower risk than we initially suspected. Nothing in the article you reference would refute this notion. More young gay men are becoming infected because our prevention efforts are ineffective and underfunded. When's the last time you saw a condom add on network TV? Add to this Dubya's disastrous abstinence-only, anti-science sex-education programs and you can begin to understand the underlying causes of this increase in new infections!

Dr. Bob

Can you get HIV throguh humping your dog.
