Please help did Elisa fail me?!
Aug 24, 2007

Dear Dr. Bob,

First, your site has been so helpful for me to help calm my nerves lately. This by far is the best resource on the web. I think I've read almost everything here. Second, I will definitely donate, because the more I use your site the more I realize that its so important to have someone like you to talk to scared and confused people like me. Please help answer my question! My boyfriend is getting strange mono like symptoms and I want to make sure I didnt give him anything without knowing my true status!

I am a 31 year old male. Approximately 20 months ago, I had contact with a professional sex worker in Korea. I have had three standard Elisa HIV tests performed by Quest Diagnostics at 3 months, 11 months, and 19 months. All negative.

Heres my problem: Approximately 4 months ago, I began to experience strange pains in my abdomen. CT scan saw nothing unusual except slightly enlarged spleen. The abdominal pain was followed by 4 months of pain/neuropathies/weakness throughout my body. There are too many to list. Recently I was diagnosed with "Small Fiber Neuropathy" through a skin test. I dont have diabetes or anything else that I know of that could cause the Neuropathy. I still have the abdominal pain. Also, approximately two months ago, I was diagnosed with a positive RNP antibody test (85.6) and Postitive ANA at 1:40 titer, fine speckled. I had many other rheumatological/antibody tests, all negative. EMG/NCV normal.

I had a western blot for Lyme, in which the IGG P41 band was reactive, though no other bands were reactive. I hear IGG P41 is bad and possibly HIV related!

Doc please help, Im worried about myself, but more about my partner! I need to know if I should take more action.

Thanks so much. Richard

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello Richard,

Thanks for your kind comments.

Your symptoms and laboratory tests to date indicate you most likely have an autoimmune disease, not HIV. Your three negative ELISA tests out to 19 months are definitive and conclusive. HIV is not your problem. No way. No how. I would suggest you follow up with a rheumatologist.

Thanks for your donation to The Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation (www.concertedeffort.org). It's urgently needed and warmly appreciated.

Good luck.

Dr. Bob
