Blood from a Cut on Hand
Aug 9, 2007
Hi Doc, Thanks for your tension defusing humor along with serious messages. My brother and sister did something helpful but stupid too. They helped a kid who severely cut herself while playing and she was bleeding badly. The problem is that my brother and sister weren't wearing gloves when they helped this kid stop bleeding and they got a lot this kid's blood on their hands and fingers. The kid's HIV and Hepatitis status is unknown. Do my brother and sister need to get tested for HIV and Hepatitis? Please answer because my whole family is stressed out about this. Thank you.
Response from Dr. Frascino
Assuming that your brother and sister did not have any open wounds, no, I do not believe HIV and hepatitis testing is warranted. These viruses cannot permeate intact skin. So as long as the blood in question did not get into an open wound or onto a mucous membrane, there would be no risk.
