HIV from HIV test
Feb 8, 2007
Hi Dr Bob,
Please let me begin by expressing my condolonces on the loss of your brother. If he was anything like you, the world has lost a good person. I also have a question to which I have found no similar questions in your archives: do you know of any cases in North America where a person was actually infected with HIV during a blood test? I know it sounds paranoid but I was wondering if there were any documented cases ( contaminated needle, etc.) Thanks for your time.
Response from Dr. Frascino
Thank you for your condolences.
Regarding acquiring HIV as a consequence of getting an HIV test, yep, that's paranoid and no, there are no documented cases of this happening. Infecting people with HIV who are coming in to find out if they are HIV infected would be rather counterproductive, doncha think?
