Unsafe vaginal sex Jan 12, 2007 You stated in an answer before: If infected vaginal/cervical fluids come into contact with the man's urethra (pee hole), HIV transmission could occur. That's why we always recommend latex condoms for penetrative sex. But isn't this risk considered rather low? Wouldn't there need to be some kind of vaginal fluid access to the blood stream? |

 Hello, Nope! That's the point! HIV is actively taken up and transported across mucous membranes such as the lining of the urethra or vagina (but not "regular skin"). Direct access to the bloodstream via cuts or abrasions is not necessary if infected fluids come into contact with mucous membranes. Dr. Bob | ||||||||
