INFECTION
Apr 8, 2001

WHEN YOU ARE FIRST INFECTED, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THAT FIRST INITIAL FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS TO APPEAR IF YOU GET THAT??????

Response from Mr. Kull

The research that has examined this issue of acute retroviral syndrome, the flu or mono-like symptoms someone experiences close to the time of HIV infection, suggests that most people manifest symptoms "within days to weeks after infection," with symptoms lasting anywhere from a few days to 10 weeks. It is probably safe to say that if one were infected, and if they were to experience ARS symptoms, the symptoms would occur within the window period (three months).

There is no specific answer to your question. People respond to HIV infection in different ways, and it is impossible to predict how each individual would respond. The more researchers learn about acute retroviral syndrome, the more they realize they do not know or need to learn. Symptoms related to recent infection are not easy to diagnose and only professionals trained in the field are equipped to make these diagnoses. Symptoms alone are not good enough to determine infection: risk history and HIV testing are necessary as well.
