NGU....plz answer even if you don't repost. I will donate again

Nov 26, 2006

Hi doc, I know you deal specifically with HIV, but I was wondering if you could answer an NGU question, even if you don't repost it. I can't find ANYONE who knows a great deal about NGU. I was diagnosed with NGU 10 days after I had protected vaginal sex with a prostitute. About 13 days before my NGU diagnosis, I had unprotected anal sex with my ex-girlfriend (the hooker visit was a direct result of us breaking up). My question is could I have acquired the bacteria that caused my NGU from my ex-girlfriend through anal sex? Could the bacteria that causes NGU be normal bacteria found in someone's rectum? I hope you can answer this question, b/c I haven't found ANYTHING on the web addressing this specific question. Thanks

Response from Dr. Frascino

Nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) is most often due to Chlamydia trachomatis (up to 50% of cases), but Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis (rarely) and even herpes simplex virus can cause NGU. Yes, NGU can result from unprotected insertive anal sex.

Dr. Bob

No question. Just thanks.
