| PEP denied. Why? Nov 11, 2006 OK I had a medium to low risk encounter. Unprotected insertive anal sex with an unknown person. HIV status is unknown too. I went to the nearest ER and the docs said to me that my risk for not getting infected was <99% and that PEP is not available for my case. Why they denied a PEP treatment? I went today so please reply asap if you can. Thanks a lot! |

Response from Dr. Frascino
Hello, nPEP (non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis) is not a "morning after pill!" It should be taken only if there has been a significant exposure to HIV. In your type of situation, depending on specific circumstances, nPEP is sometimes "offered," but not routinely "recommended". The nPEP drugs are potent and can have significant toxicities and side effects. The decision to take them should not be taken lightly. My advice is that you get an HIV test at the three-month mark and avoid future worries by always using a latex condom. Good luck. Dr. Bob | |||
