| The Question That Never Dies (Again) Nov 11, 2006 Hi Dr. Bob, I know you probably get sick of answering the same old questions but you must know how much you ease everyones minds. I just wanted to know if the ora sure salvia test where they ask you to swap the top and bottom gums with a stick and then your test is ready in 20 minutes is as accurate as the standard Elisa. I was tested at exactly 12 weeks with the ora sure and until i know from you that its as accurate I'll be taking my tired little ass to the hospital to get an Elisa test. Please let me know!! Thank you Dr. Bob!! |

Response from Dr. Frascino
Hello, I'll save that tired little tush of yours a trip. OraSure/OraQuick tests are FDA-approved and have a sensitivity and specificity of over 99%. That means they compare very favorably to standard ELISA blood tests. A negative test is a definitive negative, unless performed during the window period, which is defined as the first three months post-exposure. So stop worrying and start WOO-HOOing, OK? And just for the record, if you check the archives, you'll find not only is this a QTND (Question That Never Dies), but it also has an ATNC (Answer That Never Changes). Be well. Stay well.
