hpv and hiv

Apr 4, 2001

Sir: About 6 months ago, a small round blemish was on my tongue that appeared to be hpv. it disappeared after 3 weeks. about 3 months later, it appeared gain but was much smaller and disappeared in three days. would this be a sign that I am hiv+? please help!!!

Response from Mr. Kull

Unless you are skilled at identifying and diagnosing HPV lesions, I would advise against diagnosing yourself. It is possible that you had a couple of canker sores, which are pretty harmless (see my response to "Canker Sores" If you are concerned that you have oral HPV, see your doctor while you are having symptoms.

Nothing you describe indicates one way or the other that you are HIV infected. Only an antibody test can do that.
