| Bill Gates says microbicides are the key Aug 19, 2006 Hi, I live in Brisbane, Australia. I read in The Australian today that Bill Gates was saying that microbicides, to be in use by 2008 / 09 will, be able to be used by women by spreading it in the inside of their vaginas and that it kills HIV upon contact and therefore prevents transmission. Is this true? If it is then why wasn't it thought of ages ago - or is killing a virus upon contact a lot harder than I thought!! Any thoughts, donation coming. Amy. |

Response from Dr. Frascino
Hi Amy, We hope it will be true! And with the Gates Foundation financially backing the research and implementation, most likely it will be. Responding to your other comments/questions, actually, it was thought about ages ago and yes, developing an effective topical microbicide is indeed a lot harder than any of us expected! However, now that we have Bill Gates supporting this research, I believe we'll see steady progress, and hopefully within a few years, these products will be ready for prime-time use! Stay tuned; we'll keep you posted on this and other HIV-prevention strategies as they evolve. Dr. Bob | |||||||||
