Safe sex question from a student

Jul 12, 2006

I am a teacher. One of my students recently asked me a safe sex question:

Should someone who french kisses more than 5 people a year be tested for STD's in the absence of any other sexual contact (i.e. no oral, anal, vaginal, genital-genital, hand-genital contact)?

I told him that as far as I know, kissing is generally considered pretty safe, that HIV is not known to be transmitted via kissing, but you could get cold sores (herpes) or mono. Testing for STD's like HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, trichomoniasis, hepatitis A,B,C, etc. would probably not be needed if the person in question is only kissing and not doing anything else. I don't know about any potential increased risks with multiple kissing partners.

I also told him I would double check with an expert (i.e. you) to be sure I'm giving him correct information. I would appreciate your comments about my answer, esp. if I've given out any incorrect information!

Thank you for your expertise in advance

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello Teacher,

Your information is right on target!

BRAVO and thank you for teaching the kids sex education and answering their concerns about safer sex. By teaching scientifically sound, age-appropriate sex education, rather than an abstinence-only curriculum, you are not only doing the right thing, but you just may be saving a life by preventing an HIV infection.

I salute your efforts! I'm here any time you need backup or a quick fact check!

Dr. Bob
