Short and sweet

Jun 6, 2006

When does HIV related memory loss start to kick in, early like during ARS? Or late, like in late stage HIV?

Also thank you so much for being you :) we all appreciate it.

All my love, A BIG fan

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello Big Fan,

When does HIV-related memory loss start to kick in? Hmmm . . . gosh, I don't remember!

Actually it all depends on what you mean by HIV-related memory loss. HIV dementia can often be associated with memory loss and this is primarily seen in later-stage disease. There are many other potential causes of impaired concentration, cognitive dysfunction or poor memory, including medication side effects, opportunistic infections and psychological problems, such as depression or anxiety. If you think you are having a memory problem, the first thing to do is discuss the issue with your HIV specialist if you can remember to mention it at your next visit.
