altered sense of smell & hiv
May 22, 2006

Hi Dr. Bob Over 5 months ago I had oral only sex with a hiv + man. He gave me a blow job and rimmed me. Only saliva notice. That was it. A few weeks later I had flu like symbtoms but No fever just headaches off and on for months. I went for testing for hiv many times. 8,11,16, and 5 months and a PCR test at 11 weeks was done. I have been dealing with a lot aniexty around all this too. My question is that for the past 2 months I have been not able to smell right, my sense of smell is altered. I also have been having a lot of sinus problems too. Could this Altered smell problem be related to hiv? Have I done enough testing for hiv now 5 months out? My Doc thinks so. Signed all stuffed up. Thanks Thom

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello Thom,

Your repeatedly negative HIV tests out to five months, including an 11-week PCR, are definitive and conclusive. HIV is not your problem. No way. No how!

I cannot diagnose your problem over the Internet, but sinus congestion associated with an altered sense of smell is often a sign of nasal polyps. I would suggest you see an ENT physician for an evaluation. One thing that's for certain: HIV is not the problem.

Dr. Bob
