oral hairy leukoplakia
Apr 22, 2006
Is there any tratment for OHL? My doc says no. Should I come to The Frascino Medical Group for treatment?
Response from Dr. Frascino
Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is caused by EBV (Epstein Barr virus). Often the condition is not treated unless someone is having pain or concerned about the appearance of it. The treatment of choice is immune reconstitutions with effective HAART. As the immune system improves on effective HAART, the OHL frequently melts away. Other treatment options have included topical podophylline, surgical excision, cryotherapy and anti-EBV treatment.
The anti-EBV treatment could include acyclovir, valacyclovir, famciclovir, foscarnet, ganciclovir and valganciclovir. These are effective; however, the lesions may recur when the treatment is discontinued.
Discuss these treatment options with your HIV specialist. It may save you a trip to Los Altos to visit the Frascino Medical Group. Of course, if you need additional input, you can always call for an appointment (650-917-1357).
