Razor and toothbrush exposure?
Feb 16, 2006

This may sound like a silly question, but I just found out my former roommate is HIV+, and it got me thinking. He would always use my toothbrush and razors, even though I asked him not to. I always cut myself when I shave, and my gums sometimes bleed when I brush my teeth. He was the same way. Am I at risk? Is that even possible? He's known he's been positive for a year now, and he used my stuff about 2 months ago. I'm really worried. Thanks.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

The risk of HIV transmission via shared toothbrushes or razors is slight, but at least theoretically possible. If you are concerned, get tested at the three-month mark.

Good luck!

Dr. Bob
