| He's Wrong, " ya no[sic]!" Feb 14, 2006 The person who wrote to say that there are no gay cowboys or ranchhands has betrayed his own ignorance. Since "Brokeback Mountain" was released, quite a few publications have done articles on actual ranchers and cowboys who are gay but for the most part are deeply closeted, largely because of social stigma and the attitudes of clueless jerks like "ya no." People Magazine, for example, profiled several Western men, including a 62-year-old who lost the home he'd shared for many years with his lover after the lover's death. (The lover's family, as is too often the case, gave the surviving partner the boot.)As the old gay lib slogan said, "We are everywhere," and that includes Brokeback Mountains and ranches.
