Elevated Bilirubin and HIV tests

Oct 19, 2005

Hey there good doc,

I'm a 19 year old guy, just diagnosed with Gilbert's disease, with bilirubin level (or whatever it's called) of 30. Would this condition, which I'm told is quite common and harmless, extend the HIV window period beyond 3 months? Or does it not affect antibody production? Thanks, and enjoy your trip to Europe, you lucky monkey!

Response from Dr. Frascino

Gilbert's disease and elevated bilirubin levels will not affect the body's ability to produce anti-HIV antibodies, the duration of the "window period" or HIV test results.

And yes, I am only lucky monkey. I even won while gambling in Monte Carlo!

I'll send some good-luck karma your way, O.K.? Stay well.

Dr. Bob
