0.5 in 10,000 - no 'real' difference between recieving & giving oral??

Sep 22, 2005

Dear Dr. Frascino:

What are the data to support CDC to set 0.5 in 10000 as the per act risk in inserting oral partner?

This is almost as high as 'recieving oral'!

Are their any reported cases?

Thanks always for your generocity!

Response from Dr. Frascino

The CDC used a variety of published reports in establishing their estimated statistical risk figures. The cited reference for this statistic is Varghese B, Maher JE, Peterman TA, Branson BM, Steketee RW. Reducing the risk of sexual HIV transmission: quantifying the per-act risk for HIV on the basis of choice of partner, sex act, and condom use. Sex Transm Dis 2002;29:38--43.

Yes, there are "reported" cases, but that does not mean there are "documented" cases. The bottom line is that the risk of insertive oral is theoretical and extremely low at best.
