| prostitutes actually low risk? Aug 29, 2005 I realize one could never advocate or promote prostitution, but i've heard that the HIV infection rates for prostitutes in the US is lower than the general population? How in the heck could that be and is it true? |

Response from Dr. Frascino
Hi, Those kinds of statistics would be hard to validate, because prostitution remains illegal in the U.S. However, I can tell you that professional sex workers generally know more about STD and HIV prevention than the vast majority of their clients. If they didn't protect themselves, they wouldn't stay in business very long. After all, we assume that professional carpenters know more than we do about the proper way to screw or nail something together. Right? So why wouldn't we expect a professional sex worker to know more about the proper (safe) way to screw or nail us? As Dr. Spock says, "It's only logical." Dr .Bob | |||||||||
