corticosteroid question has me on edge about asthma meds

Jul 13, 2005

Hey Doc, You've said that high dose corticosteroids like Prednisone can sometimes cause false negatives. What exactly is a 'high dose'? I use an albuterol inhaler and advair diskus daily for asthma. Could this have lead to false 12 and 24 week negatives? You're wonderful.

Response from Dr. Frascino

The amount of corticosteroids absorbed from using Advair Diskus in the recommended doses would not alter HIV-antibody test results. Albuterol does not contain any steroids. So "breathe easy," my wheezy friend, your HIV test results are definitive and conclusive.

Stay well!
