| Law enforcement risks Jul 1, 2005 Hi Dr. Frascino Great work you are doing here! Thank you for providing some comic relief to people in need. My questions deals with a recent arrest. I took in a street person who had urinated all over himself and when i picked him up off the ground i thought i may have got some on my hand. Normally i am great with universal precautions but this time i didn't have any gloves on. I washed my hands and forgot about it, but later i started to worry. Am i O.K.? thanks bob Barry |

Response from Dr. Frascino
Hi Barry, Urine is a sterile fluid and consequently does not contain HIV. Therefore there would be no HIV transmission risk. Even if you touch an HIV-infected fluid, such as blood or ejaculate, the virus cannot cross intact skin. That said, I, of course, still strongly support universal precautions. So are you OK? Sure, Barry, you're OK with me! Hey, now that I've done you a favor, can you do anything about the parking ticket I got the other day? Stay well. Stay safe. Dr. Bob | |||||||||
