Hairy leukoplakia but negative elisa, HELP

Feb 18, 2005

Dr. Robert, I desperatly need an answer from you! I have tested out past 14 months with 5 elisa tests, 2,3,7,11,and 14 months, all negative. I am married and never told my husband I performed oral sex on another man. How stupid of me! He went to the dentist last week and it looks like he has hairy leukoplakia! How can my test be negative if he has this!?? He has had no organ transpants or any other health issues. I am going insane with worry! Could my eilsa tests be wrong, and what futher testing do I need? Please help me with an answer, Going Insane

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello Going Insane,

Your problem is not HIV. Five negative ELISAs out to 14 months are already four more tests than you needed. Your problem is guilt, not HIV. I suggest you level with your husband and stop chasing a disease you could not possibly have.

As for your husband's problem, first off, there are many conditions that look like hairy leukoplakia, but are not. Plus, there are causes for hairy leukoplakia unrelated to HIV. Finally, if your husband does have HIV-related hairy leukoplakia, he did not get it from you. OK?

Could your ELISA tests be wrong? No.

What further testing do you need? None.

Hope that helps!

Dr. Bob
