| aggressive virus vs. nice virus Jun 8, 2004 Dear Mr. Bob! I met a cute HIV-positive guy who told me about his rather aggressive virus. During two years living with HIV he has nearly died twice. My virus is quite nice to me, am living with it for 19 years now. Now Im wondering how risky it would be to have unsafe sex with this cute guy??? Can I get this aggressive virus, too? Ciao! |

Response from Dr. Frascino
Hello, Yep, unfortunately this is indeed a possibility! How often this occurs, we do not know, but there are now several well documented cases of both "superinfection" (acquiring a second distinct and possibly more aggressive HIV strain) and "coinfection" (simultaneously being exposed to and contracting more than one HIV strain during the period before HIV antibodies form). These risks are no longer only theoretical. In my opinion, "is raw worth the risk?" No, not on your life! Dr. Bob | |||||||||
