Mar 20, 2001

Hi Doctor,

I have read the answers given by you to this question. Can you please clarify me this (etc) you add to the flu symptons other than headache, fatigue, fever ,body aches.

What other symptons can come at early stages?

The answer to this question will clear everybody's doubts and anxities.

Thanks

Response from Mr. Kull

The following is taken from a recent article reviewing literature on primary HIV infection:

"The most common signs and symptoms include fever (median maximal temperature,38.9 C), fatigue, rash that is usually maculopapular but may have protean presentations, headache, lymphadenopathy, pharyngitis, myalgia, arthralgia, aseptic meningitis, retro-orbital pain, weight loss, depression, gastrointestinal distress, night sweats, and oral or genital ulcers." (NEJM, 339(1), 33-39)

It is futile to attempt to diagnose HIV infection based on symptoms that you are having. Symptom diagnosis should be the responsibility of a medical professional, and even she would not diagnose HIV infection solely from symptom presentation. Your risk for infection will be best determined by a risk assessment and an antibody test.
