|Earliest HIV Test While Under PEP
Feb 11, 2004
Of all the HIV tests availible, which ones provide the earliest detection for HIV while one is under PEP? Thank you.

I am not aware of any study that has been done to answer this question. The important thing to note about PEP and HIV tests is that viral load testing would not be reliable, because PEP could drive viral load to undetectable levels. The current recommendations are to perform antibody testing at the time of exposure and repeat that testing at six weeks, three months, and six months. Theoretically, an HIV viral culture would be the first to become positive, if someone was seroconverting despite PEP. However, this test is not readily available, and is not recommended for this type of application.
Hope that answers your question.
