Hetrosex is not the primary source of HIV/AIDS in the Developing World
Dec 7, 2003

Hi Dr Bob,

Please consider this argument.

Studies have proved that the rapid spread of this disease in the developing world is primarily the outcome of poor hospital sanitation. People in Africa are more likely to be infected by dirty injections recieved at hospitals than through sex.

I dont know what you think about this Dr. Bob but it would certainly explain the radically different progression of AIDS in Africa. For example, studies have shown that large numbers of children infected are born to a mother who is HIV negative.

As one doctor supporting this study wittily put it:

"All those tortured suggestions of Africans having sex with monkeys, children or dozens of prostitutes, of having too much anal sex or injecting vast amounts of drugs, can now finally be put aside as the embarrassing lunacy that they surely were."

AIDS has always been presented as a moral problem rather than a medical issue. The problem of AIDS in Africa is not a moral one but a medical one caused by extreme poverty. It is convinient, however, for Western governments to conceal the true cause of the spread of this disease in the Developing World in order to support their right-wing moral agendas.

Ask yourself Dr Bob, why is it that HIV in the West is stubbornly situated in certain high-risk categories while, in the developing world, it's not. I say that the rapid progression of this disease in Africa is caused by poverty (i.e. objective factors), and not by a lack of responsibility or awareness on behalf of individuals.

We can only defeat this disease if governments understand its true nature and stop using it as a metaphor to support their moral conservative/religious policies.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

The wildfire spread of HIV/AIDS in developing countries has many overlapping causes, including, but not limited to, poverty. Yes, the "moral problem" rationality has never made sense to anyone with half a brain or ounce of common sense, which probably explains why it was believed by the ultra rightwing conservative religious wing-nuts.

Heterosexual sex remains the most common cause of HIV transmission in the developing world. Condoms are not readily available in many parts of the world. The Bush administration has cut off the supple of free condoms the US had been supplying to some of these nations.

The UN Global Fund has the right idea on how to effectively fight the epidemic in the developing world. Unfortunately (and predictably), Bush and his cronies don't agree.

Stay well, Rob.

Dr. Bob
