HOw many years have you been on meds and what was your biggest med complaint?
| Response from Dr. Frascino
Hello Jerry Lewis! (?) !
Wow, I love it when the stars write in. I thought your work with Dean Martin was brilliant, by the way.
I was infected in January of 1991, took PEP with AZT, but still seroconverted. I discontinued meds until my T-cells dropped and viral load started rising in the fall of 1995. I switched to HAART in the summer of 1996, and have continued ever since.
Biggest med complaint? That would depend on when you ask me. Let me list some standouts:
1. Fatigue Who has time to be tired? 2. Kidney stones Definitely not a life enhancing experience. 3. Lipoatrophy Didn't think I'd be needing the services of a plastic surgeon (for New-Fill injections) so soon. Is this how Joan Rivers and Michael Jackson got started? 4. Peripheral neuropathy It's hard enough to play concerts (I'm a pianist) without adding numbness, tingling, altered sensation, and discomfort to the challenges already posed by trying to master the 88's!
The list could go on but, to tell you the truth, I'm just not a complainer. So looking on the bright side of even these annoying side effects, I could say:
1. Fatigue Now I get to enjoy more naps and I do some of my best work in a horizontal position (but that's another story). 2. Kidney stones These have resolved off the offending medication. So getting "stoned" now, once again has altogether different and much more pleasurable connotations. 3. Lipoatrophy With a little help form the "Wizard on Park and 73rd" (a reference to "A Chorus Line" for you musical theater buffs), I'm now getting some very unanticipated compliments from friends and colleagues! 4. Peripheral neuropathy What a great excuse if I happen to hit wrong notes during a concert!
OK Jerry, I'll let you get back to your telethon now. Take care.
