|Herpes casual contact
Apr 7, 2003
My brother has Genital Herpes (HSV-2). Whenever he comes home to visit from University I feel uncomfortable and wash my hands after I touch anything he may have touched. I am very worried because I am always avoiding things that he may have contacted. Can the virus live for any amount of time outside the body, on a bar of soap perhaps? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

You really shouldn't be worrying about infection with herpes simplex virus unless your skin is coming into DIRECT CONTACT with herpes sores on your brother's skin. It is highly unlikely that you would get infected with genital herpes through any other route besides sexual contact.
The same goes for other sexually transmitted infections.
