Semen in food
Mar 3, 2003

I recently purchased a salad from a grocery store deli that was packaged in a plastic container. After eating some of this(without dressing)I discovered something that appeared to be semen down inside the salad. I'm sure some if it got into my mouth! Could HIV be contracted in this way?

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

Now I realize some guys will go to great lengths to get their partners to swallow, but let me get this straight. You bought a packaged salad from a deli and you think it had semen in it? Certainly some famous restaurants and delis advertise "secret ingredients," but really honey, are you quite certain your salad actually contained "special sauce?" I mean, how likely is it that guys packaging your field greens would be so turned on by a piece of lettuce that they would suddenly whip it out and choke the chicken in front of their co-workers, giving your salad a "spunk vinaigrette" dressing?

OK, let's suspend reality for a moment and assume your chef's salad had some "chef juice" in it. And let's assume the chef was HIV-positive and you accidentally munched down some of his boy batter. What's the risk of contracting HIV? Essentially non-existent. HIV does not live long out of the body.

I have 2 pieces of advice for you:

1. Stop worrying. 2. Consider changing delis.

Stay well.

Dr. Bob
