Condom allergy?

Jan 19, 2003

I have been with my boyfriend for 9 months now, and i have noticed that after sex the area around my vagina became red, sore, and had small lesions. It also burns to urinate. I thought that maybe it was some sort of an std, but by the time i went to get checked out, the sores were gone, so i was clean. My boyfriend and i refrained from sex for 2 weeks, and it totally cleared up, however last night we had sex again, and the sores and lesions were back today.. could i be allergic to something in the condoms we use?

Response from Mr. Kull

It's possible that you have an allergy either to the latex or the lubricant that is sometimes used on condoms (make sure that nonoxynol-9 is not in the lubricant, as that commonly causes irritation). Try using polyurethane condoms and a lubricant like K-Y and see if that makes a difference.

You should also see a doctor when you are experiencing your symptoms to rule out the possibility of infections. You can get the most accurate diagnosis that way.
