oral sex

Jan 14, 2003

I was wondering, is it possible to get aids through oral sex? If so, how possible?

Response from Mr. Kull

Yes, it is possible to become infected with HIV when engaging in oral sex. There is only evidence that people get infected with HIV when performing oral sex on an HIV infected person (the receptive partner), and the risk seems to be greatest for those people performing oral sex on an HIV infected man. However, it is important to remember that, in comparison to vaginal and anal sex, the risk for transmission through oral sex is low.

There is the potential for HIV transmission when HIV infected fluids--blood, semen, vaginal secretions--come into contact with mucous membranes--lining of vagina, rectum, urethra, mouth--of an uninfected person. There is also the possibility of transmission when those fluids have direct access to the bloodstream (usually through injection needles). Since fluids come into contact with the lining of the mouth during oral sex, the possibility of transmission must be considered.
