Accupuncture Risk

Oct 8, 2002

Do you know if accupuncture treatment uses new needles for each patient? Also, I witnessed an accupuncture therapist applying needle to a friend, wiped away a small amount of blood from the wound with cotton ball, but failed to wash his hands between treatments on different patients. I would like to know if such procedures warrants concerns about HIV transmission. Thanks.

Response from Mr. Kull

Acupuncturists in North America are trained to practice infection control measures. This means that new needles are used for each patient, or if new needles are not used, they are required to be sterilized (sterilization is probably more common among physician acupuncturists). There is no evidence that HIV has been transmitted to a patient through acupuncture.

Make sure that your acupuncturist is licensed to practice in your state.
