What is giardia and what is the important information I should know about giardia ?
| Response from Mr. Kull
Giardia is a parasite that causes intestinal infections. Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, gas, and cramps. It is transmitted through oral contact with feces infected with the parasite. This can happen through eating or drinking contaminated food or water, but can also be transmitted during oral-anal contact with an infected person. It is also possible to become infected with giardia during other types of sex where feces could come into contact with the mouth. Sometimes people refer to an infection with an intestinal parasite as having "parasites".
Avoid infection with intestinal parasites by avoiding fecal-oral contact. During oral-anal contact a barrier could be used, and after engaging in any other type of anal sex, wash your hands to avoid accidental fecal contact with your mouth.
Treatment for giardiasis is available.
